Con m\u00e1s de 250 obras, desde el siglo 18 hasta el presente,\u00a0de sobre 150 puertorrique\u00f1os, la exhibici\u00f3n presenta una mirada a la experiencia de la puertorrique\u00f1idad a trav\u00e9s del arte.\u00a0En ella se hallan a\u00f1oranzas, homenajes, denuncias, contrastes y convergencias, adem\u00e1s de provocaciones para el di\u00e1logo. Esto, a trav\u00e9s de una variedad de objetos y medios art\u00edsticos.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Si bien 'Puerto Rico Plural' comprende 21 galer\u00edas del Museo, la exhibici\u00f3n da inicio en el exterior, en la fachada principal. Con el paso de los a\u00f1os la entrada principal del Museo hab\u00eda comenzado a exhibir muestras de deterioro. Dado esto, la Junta de S\u00edndicos del MAPR, llev\u00f3 a cabo un proceso de an\u00e1lisis sobre la manera en que el Museo ha evolucionado y c\u00f3mo hacerlo a\u00fan m\u00e1s accesible a sus visitantes. La evaluaci\u00f3n culmin\u00f3 en la determinaci\u00f3n de convertir la entrada del Museo en un espacio abierto que lleva por nombre 'Plaza de las Artes'.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the new plaza, the main gates were removed, allowing direct access to the building from De Diego Avenue. In addition, the existing trees were relocated, and benches and public areas were installed for use by visitors and the Santurc community.<\/p>\n<p>El dise\u00f1o de la 'Plaza de las Artes' estuvo a cargo de la firma de arquitectos Luis A. Guti\u00e9rrez Arquitectos, PSC, quien fue uno de los responsables de la restauraci\u00f3n y dise\u00f1o del ala nueva del Museo. Las mejoras f\u00edsicas a los predios del Museo fueron posibles gracias a una gesti\u00f3n a estos fines del Banco Gubernamental de Fomento, entidad propietaria de la estructura que alberga el MAPR.<\/p>\n<p>The Puerto Rico Museum of Art (MAPR) celebrated the opening of its new Plaza de las Artes on September 17, 2011, with a major event open to the public that highlighted the reason for its creation: to foster community life and art for all. \u00a0The artistic program for the opening was organized by the cultural alliance arteSanturce. During the opening ceremonies, a tribute was also paid to the artist couple Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla, who represented the United States at the 54th Venice Biennale and are residents of Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n<p>The traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony was replaced by a sound-and-light show never before seen in Puerto Rico (\u20183D mapping projection\u2019) created by Puerto Rican artist Anaitt\u00e9 Vaccaro, which featured live performances by the contemporary dance company Andanza. The historic building, originally designed in the 1920s by architect William H. Shimmelphening, is the only existing structure of the 13 that comprised the old San Juan Municipal Hospital. The building served as the complex's surgical hospital until 1966, the year the R\u00edo Piedras Medical Center was inaugurated. The initial work team was joined by architects Otto Reyes Casanova and Luis Guti\u00e9rrez Negr\u00f3n, who established \u201cThe Museum Group\u201d to develop the project. This group was responsible for the restoration and rehabilitation of the old San Juan Municipal Hospital, the design of the new 10,000-square-foot east wing, which currently houses the Museum's administrative areas, and the design of the underground parking and botanical garden. For its part, the Government Development Bank for Puerto Rico (GDB) approved the museum project and allocated funds for its construction.
